Halloween is coming and Americans are scared

Dear Editor, Halloween is typically a relaxed day for America’s kids to fill their coffers with candy. Children and adults often don their favorite wacky attire for a day of comic relief. America needs a day of some kind of relief and maybe Halloween will provide some insanity or terror relief. Because nothing about Halloween is as scary as what America and the world has been experiencing. We have buried over 220,000 Americans from Covid-19. Over eight million have been sick. Nursing homes and Intensive Care Units have become horror wards. The projections for more sickness and death scare most…

Argument for authorization to sell surplus real property

Dear Editor, The Kingman Area Chamber of Commerce is in support of authorizing the City to sell and develop approximately 1813.40 acres of City-owned property located in the Kingman Airport and Industrial Park.  Having this land available for sale will encourage future industrial and airport growth as outlined in the 2019 Kingman Airport and Industrial Park impact analysis. The land has been formally declared as surplus property to be sold to interested companies or at public auction. Per statute any City-owned property valued above $1,500,000 must be referred to voters for authorization of sale. Passage of this initiative would eliminate…

Why the NACFD #1 candidates are asking for equal time

Dear Editor, On November 3, during the General Election, the Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District #1 (NACFD1) will be holding an election to fill three seats on its board. Richard Veradt, Gerald Lucero and Susan Brown are challenging three incumbents, Jim Bailey, Mike Collins and Erik Berg for their seats. Each of us has attended many meetings of the board for many years and are unhappy with how our fire district is being managed. We have spoken out at public meetings, requested assistance, and yet are still not seeing improvements. On Sept. 23, Jim Bailey released a statement on behalf…

Open letter to Arizona State Representatives

To all Arizona State Representatives: Please review AZ Statute 26-303 (Emergency Powers of Governor). During a “State of Emergency” the Governor shall have “COMPLETE authority over ALL agencies of the state government…” The Governor himself/herself is the single source of the determination and declaration of an emergency. “Emergency” is so vaguely and broadly defined that virtually ANYTHING will serve as an excuse to make such a declaration. I intend no hyperbole or figurative language here: By law, Arizona is a de facto dictatorship. I think our state legislature should rethink that statute’s intent and language, even if only for the…

Prop 207 is smoke and mirrors – bad for AZ kids

Dear Editor, Like a magic trick, Arizona’s Proposition 207 is not what it seems. Prop 207 is called “The Smart and Safe Arizona Act” but neither adjective reflects the reality it proposes. Take it from us, Coloradans who saw the same smoke-and-mirrors trick eight years ago. After the magic show ended in 2012 and Colorado voters agreed to regulate marijuana similar to alcohol, we were left with: increasing marijuana-impaired traffic fatalities, rising frequency of marijuana use by youth, exponentially higher potency with radically new marijuana products, almost double the national rate for daily marijuana use among young adults. Reasonable people…
