Individual civic involvement encouraged

Dear Editor, The controversy in the Southern Baptist Convention over systemic racism (critical race theory) points to the politicized nature of Christianity from the beginning. The earliest issue was whether or not to fellowship with heathens. By the time of the Reformation, the church had been on a 1,500-year quest to amass wealth and influence in the world through political means. When modern nations enforced separation of church and state, the church found protection from marginalization by asserting its supremacy over government in matters like providing for the success of families, the eradication of crime and punishment, and the construction…

Don’t give up your personal freedom

Dear Editor, You may create instability and insecurity for your personal life if you put others in charge of your decisions.  The idea of a child or acquaintance “shouldering” your life’s concerns and finances might feel comforting. Having someone else pay your bills and oversee your welfare might feel like a relief. For many it ends up being the end of freedom and security.  You love your children, or that special niece or grandchild. You are so bonded to them. You may feel that adding their name to your checking or other financial accounts will increase your bond and the…

Fire danger informational notice

Dear Editor, Due to the High Fire Alert in Mojave County this year, now would be a good time to clean up your easement on your property. Property Owners who have block walls will possibly be better off than wooden and chain link fences for fire. Reference the Declaration of Covenants, Limitations and Restrictions, under easements (Art. 1, Part 8, Easements, 1972); “Within all Easements, no structures, planting, fencing or other material shall be placed or permitted to remain, which may damage or interference with installation and maintenance of utilities.” This would include weed abandonment. The fire department and Mojave…

Medical care, American Dream or Nightmare?

Dear Editor, Until recently my wife and I paid over $2,000 a month for medical insurance. We each had a $6,000 deductible. One year we both had procedure’s which meant we had $12,000 in out of pocket expenses. There were also some other “uncovered” medical costs throughout the year which resulted in over $40,000 in medical insurance and out of pocket costs. The procedures themselves of course cost far and above what our out of pocket expenses were. Most likely if we had not had health insurance the doctors and medical facilities would not have performed them. In America, you…
