Lake Mead NRA officials announce reopening of the park

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Lake Mead National Recreation Area officials are reopening the park Tuesday after closing on August 19 as a safety precaution in anticipation of the arrival of Tropical Storm Hilary.   “Thankfully, there were no injuries and facilities received minimal damage in the wake of this storm,” said Acting Superintendent Mike Gauthier. “We are pleased to announce we are open for business again.”  Most facilities and services are fully operational. The exceptions are the concessioner-operated Las Vegas Boat Harbor, which was severely damaged in an August 18 monsoon, and the Callville Bay Marina, which is currently without power. Due to recent rain storms and in anticipation of additional storms in southern California and Arizona, the Bureau of Reclamation is reducing water releases from Davis and Parker dams on the lower Colorado River. The reduced releases at both dams is expected to continue possibly through Wednesday, Aug. 23. At Parker Dam, north of Parker, Arizona, hourly releases have been reduced to approximately 1,800 cubic feet per second (cfs). Hourly releases at Davis Dam, north of Laughlin, Nevada, will be reduced to approximately 2,300 cfs beginning tonight at 11 p.m. MST and may fluctuate between 2,300 cfs and 3,900 cfs…

Red Cross preparing for inclement weather

In response to Tropical Storm Hilary, the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross is collaborating with Emergency Management in LA Paz, Pima, and Yuma Counties. Volunteers are on standby in case emergency shelters are needed. Courtney Slanaker, Executive Director of Southern AZ, said, “Thanks to our incredible cadre of volunteers and staff, we are prepared to shelter people potentially displaced by the storm.” Slanaker emphasized the extreme dangers and unpredictability of flash flooding, especially on the roadways and dry riverbeds that cross over a street.
