KINGMAN – Residents on the south side of the railroad tracks were probably awakened to the blaring horns and sirens of Kingman Fire Department trucks.
At about 6:30 a.m. Monday, KFD responded to a small fire at a homeless encampment on Old Trails Road about a quarter mile east of the first BNSF Black Bridge.
Two engines and a brush truck arrived at the site and crews began extinguishing the fire which had already began to burn beyond the hastily built camp.
“There’s a trail carved in and even one of those portable hospital toilets here,” said Matt Wolsey, Battalion Chief of Operations.
None of the homeless occupants were found near the scene.
The fire was out by 6:40 a.m. and a crew stuck around for mop-up duty for about 15 minutes to make sure any hot coals didn’t reignite and start a larger brush fire in the hills.
“Luckily there was no wind this early,” Wolsey said.
By 7 a.m. it was back to business as usual.
