Drainage workshop goal to update 30-year-old policies

City council

KINGMAN — The City of Kingman is inviting residents, engineers, developers, and community partners to participate in an important public workshop to review proposed updates to the City’s Drainage Manual, which has not been comprehensively updated since 1988. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, October 29, at 3 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 310 N. Fourth St.

This long-overdue update marks a significant milestone in the City’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its infrastructure standards and ensuring that local development aligns with current best practices in stormwater management. Over the past three decades, Kingman has experienced substantial growth, and evolving climate patterns have placed greater emphasis on responsible stormwater design, drainage planning, and flood mitigation. Updating the manual is a key step toward maintaining public safety and protecting property while supporting sustainable community growth.

During the workshop, City staff and technical consultants will present proposed revisions to key sections of the manual, including stormwater storage and basin design standards, drainage requirements for new development, and policies regarding utilities and outlet systems within stormwater basins. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the new storage and drain time requirements, the methodology behind updated calculations, and the proposed schedule for completion and adoption of the revised manual.

This meeting is designed to be interactive, providing time for questions, feedback, and open discussion. Input from residents, engineers, developers, and local business owners is essential to ensuring the updated Drainage Manual reflects the needs and realities of Kingman’s growing community while maintaining technical integrity and environmental responsibility.

Community members who are unable to attend in person are encouraged to send their questions and comments to Mike Garmon at MGarmon@cityofkingman.gov.

By participating in this workshop, residents can play a direct role in shaping how Kingman manages stormwater challenges today and, in the decades, ahead.
