Bullhead City continues to enjoy healthy economic development activity. City Manager Toby Cotter delivered that message during the July 16 council meeting. The elevation of a local veteran prosecutor to the bench sends ripples through the Mohave County legal system. County attorney Matt Smith hangs a help wanted sign on his door as he looks to replace Megan McCoy, the 13 year office veteran who fills a newly established Court Commission judicial position starting August 5. Presiding Judge Charles Gurtler is making some case assignment adjustments within the county’s judiciary team. McCoy will inherit some of the dependency, child support, juvenile delinquency and arraignment responsibilities currently handled by County Commissioner Doug Camacho. An attorney who owns a Scottsdale law firm has been selected to serve as Mohave County Public Defender. County manager Mike Hendrix said Christopher Stavris has accepted the county’s employment offer. Stavris’ hiring is subject to approval by the Board of Supervisors. Confirmation would see Stavris begin his new job on August 12, at an annual salary of about $120,000. Stavris would succeed interim PDO Richard Weiss. The retired Judge has been holding down the fort since former Public Defender Alex Bolobonoff retired earlier this year.
