SWAT called after armed man barricaded himself inside apartment

KINGMAN – An argument that escalated to an assault drew police to a Kingman apartment complex on Saturday, May 9. Police initially responded at 1:30 p.m. to an apartment in the 3000 block of Hualapai Mountain Road.

Kingman Police Chief Rusty Cooper said officers learned the dispute involved Shane Peterson, 51, and a 52-year-old woman.

“When officers attempted to contact Peterson, he brandished a firearm, prompting officers to retreat and take cover,” Chief Cooper said. “Peterson, who was believed to be heavily intoxicated and in possession of multiple firearms, barricaded himself inside the apartment and refused to comply with commands to exit peacefully.”

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to the scene at 3:30 p.m. and nearby residents were evacuated.

“After approximately four and a half hours of negotiations and multiple attempts to secure a peaceful surrender, including the use of gas inside the apartment, Peterson was taken into custody at approximately 8:30 p.m.,” Cooper said.

The victim was treated at the scene while Peterson cleared a medical check and was booked into the Adult Detention Facility. He faces multiple aggravated assault charges, resisting arrest, criminal damage and prohibited possession of a firearm.
