KINGMAN – Tears flowed on both sides of the courtroom Thursday, Feb. 6, as a Kingman man was sentenced for shooting and killing his friend last February. Bradley Stumpf, 32, previously pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of Jason McCafferty, 46.
Stumpf’s father apologized to McCafferty’s family and asked for mercy, while the victim’s family questioned the propriety of a plea agreement capping prison time at 20 years. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle ordered a 16-year prison term for Stumpf.
The defendant and victim were doing some survey work in Phoenix before they drove back to Kingman on February 11, 2019. McCafferty was shot as the vehicle he was driving was exiting Interstate 40 on the Stockton Hill off ramp.
“We were both under the influence of methamphetamine,” Stumpf told Judge Carlisle. “We were up for about 36 hours … I don’t know why but I was hearing voices.”
McCafferty’s parents sobbed as they addressed the Court separately.
“Our son is dead and he’s still alive and I don’t think that’s right,” Mr. McCafferty said. “My son deserved to live.”
