Public safety, dumping is a focal point for citizens

MOHAVE COUNTY – A meeting for the Mohave County Board of Supervisors was held on Dec 2. During the meeting three separate issues pertaining to safety and resident welfare were addressed.

Amanda Kaufman of Kingman raised concerns about the safety of public roads during the inclement weather. Kaufman spoke about the recent difficulties of the Pine Lake community of the Hualapai Mountains. Kaufman mentioned years of snow and ice storms and drivers struggling to drive safely. Kaufman stated that she witnessed tailgating, loss of motor control, a near accident, and an actual accident, all caused by the icy conditions.

“Had the road been closed hours before or had the county blocked it, barricaded it, just restricted it to four-wheel drive or chains only, this wouldn’t have happened. All I’m asking today is that you guys request your staff to go over their procedures on winter maintenance on these roads. And I’d be happy to sit down with them and express these concerns,” said Kaufman.

Joy Bancroft of Golden Shores, re-raised an issue about fire safety. She stated that currently there is an inordinate amount of junk and abandoned cars on properties in Golden Shores, and may be a fire hazard and fire safety issue. She discussed her efforts with the Golden Shores Fire Board and her efforts to communicate with the Fire Chief. “I’ve spoken with the Fire Chief, he apologized and informed me that he really has no authority to conduct residential property inspections or write citations.” As such, the issue is currently stalled, as such Bancroft asked the board for a discussion of this issue.

“I know the big cities have their own ordinances, but we’re kind of left in the cold to try and handle things as much as we can,” said Bancroft. “I’m asking that the board put this on their agenda and we could talk about this as a public discussion.”

Rick Dischinger of Topock, raised a general point about creating a safer community for children. “One of the things that I’m really concerned about, being a past educator, is the safety of our kids. I really think that code enforcement could be the roots of helping our situation down there. We could help kids not live in squalor.” Dischinger extended an invitation to the board to come to Topock so that they could see some of ‘the really horrible conditions’. Lastly he discussed the formation of a posse in Topock and discussed the formation of posses in other rural places in Mohave County.

No action was taken on citizen comments; however discussion was made regarding agendizing the safety items for a future meeting.

The next Mohave County Board of Supervisors meeting takes place on Dec 16 at 700 W. Beale St., 9:30 a.m.

  1. The State of ARIZONA has a policy of no chains on their highway and road because it destroys the road you know that
