From the Canyon to the Oasis

kent simmons, pastor of Canyon Community Church

KINGMAN — On August 3rd, Pastor Kent Simmons will transition from Lead Pastor at Canyon Community Church to Teaching Pastor Emeritus after completing 26 years as the founding pastor.

New Lead Pastor, Dennis Oberg, along with his wife, Amy, a gifted worship leader in her own right, will encourage the congregation on its continuing spiritual journey.

From humble beginnings in 1999, Canyon Community Church, a non-denominational Christian church, organized, constituted, and began renting the Community Center at Centennial Park for the following three years.

In 2002, Canyon purchased a building on North Bank Street now known as The Kingman Gingerbread House (unaffiliated with the church) and continued to grow.

Later, in 2006, Canyon moved to its current location at 3270 N. Harvard Street after purchasing the existing church and property from The Free Methodist Church.

In addition to Pastor Simmons’ new role, the church will rebrand to become Oasis Church of Kingman, AZ.

This change, rather than reflecting a marketing strategy, has spiritual significance as Pastor Simmons remarks, “Oasis has both a physical and spiritual connotation to the name. Of greatest importance is the idea that church can and should be a place of refreshment and redemption for one’s soul. Metaphorically, in the desert that is often the life experience, a welcome oasis gives one strength to press on.”

“Additionally, Oasis hopes to complete a grander landscape plan that started three years ago which will welcome one into a near desert oasis complete with indigenous plants, trees, flowering shrubs, and water features. The theme is learn, grow, and overflow in the Christian life and experience.”

The community is always welcome to attend but is especially invited on August 10th when Pastor Oberg delivers his first official sermon as Lead Pastor.
