Dairy Queen opened on Saturday

A brand new Dairy Queen opened in Kingman on Saturday, welcoming a steady stream of customers over the weekend. Co-owner Raman Kalra said challenges and issues associated with development on the small property parcel kept the store from opening before the summer season.

“I really wanted to open up in February but we still have a couple of months of warm weather,” Kalra said. “I think we’ll stay busy and I hope this momentum continues.”

Kalra said it’s no surprise that customers are flocking to the store for ice cream treats and other menu favorites.

“DQ has a cult following. Every time you open a new store it’s crazy busy for months and months,” Kalra said. “We usually see it takes five or six months to drop down to regular business.”

Employees in training on Friday, the day before DQ opened

Kalra said 36 employees have been hired and trained to work for the store manager. He said additional applications for those who go through the application process through DQKingman@yahoo.com.

Kalra said DQ will involve itself in community affairs and charity.

“We want to be part of the community and we want to give back to the community,” Kalra said. “That’s what DQ is all about.”
