Chloride to celebrate 49th annual Old Miners’ Day

City of Chloride welcome sign

CHLORIDE – Chloride will be celebrating the 49th annual Old Miners’ Day on Saturday, October 4th. The folks in the oldest inhabited silver mining town site in Arizona, honor the memory of the hard rock miners who worked the more than 70 mines in the Cerbat Mountains just east of town.

The celebration begins at 9 a.m. when the bake sale opens at the corner of Elkhart and Second Street. This year’s raffle prizes will include food gift certificates, hotel stays, jewelry, clothing, and lots more. The Silver Sage Vigilantes gunfight group will perform in Cyanide Springs at 11 a.m. The Vigilantes will take you back 100 years when the streets of Chloride were full of desperadoes, miners, and other questionable characters.

At “High Noon,” the always hilarious Chloride parade marches down Tennessee Avenue. This year Chloride’s VFW Post 2190 members will be the color guard, followed by floats, equestrian, classic cars, and ATVs.  If you want to be in the parade but haven’t signed up yet, late arrivals are welcome and can sign up from 9:30 till 11 a.m. at the Town Hall on Payroll Avenue.

The Silver Sage Vigilantes will perform again at 1 p.m. in Cyanide Springs. Those attending the gunfights can also visit the Jim Fritz Museum and the playhouse next door. Both are full of memorabilia from Chloride’s glory days. Many unique shops and vendors are also available all over town.

A complete map of businesses and historic sites in town will be available at Mineshaft Market. The market has food, as well as Yesterday’s Restaurant and VFW. If you like to hike or have a 4-wheel drive vehicle visit the world-famous Roy Purcell Murals about a mile east of town. Be sure to ask at the Mineshaft Market about road conditions first. Starting at 2:30 p.m. parade winners will be announced followed by the drawing of the raffle tickets in the Town Hall on Payroll Avenue.

Chloride is located 23 miles north of Kingman, and 80 miles south of Las Vegas. Take Highway 93 to State Route 125, turn east four miles. For more information call (626) 483-4571 or (702) 373-8673
