Elks to host annual toy giveaway

Dear Editor, With the holidays upon us at a very fast pace, I want to wish you and your staff (Judeo and Christian) a Happy Chanukah and a very Merry Christmas. Traditions are important! Elks Lodge 468 is continuing its tradition with free toys to local children and bringing Santa Claus to the lodge on Dec. 24. He usually arrives at 900 Gates Avenue in Kingman around 5:00 p.m. by helicopter and sometimes by fire truck! The doors open at 4:30 p.m. for children and families to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while they wait for Santa. Children from infants…

GUEST COLUMN By Jack Hommel

A tragic mistake As a desert born person who has been around for more than a three fourths of a century and who has been deeply involved in the business and the politics of water for many years, I can claim some small authority when speaking of water issues. Having been a desert lover and desert dweller for most of those years, I can unashamedly weep at the truly tragic waste of the single most precious resource we have. Yes, truly tragic, as in an ongoing tragedy of near biblical proportions. That tragedy is the undeniable fact that we use…

To catch a thief ….

Dear Editor, Thought you might be interested in an incident that happened with the sheriffs office. On the corner of 17th and Ladera in Dolan Springs, close to our place is a two-story unfinished building. It has been empty for many years. A contractor from Las Vegas had started building it and then died. I think his sister owns it. We had also been told to keep an eye out as thieves were storing stolen stuff inside it and at one time it was completely boarded up, and now several spots are open and the fence is cut. A few…

And the Russians are laughing

Dear Editor, Many years ago in Washington, D.C., far, far away, a president was elected in the land. Some of the people rejoiced, others said, nay! They were up in arms. “We shall insist he be impeached he was not born in the United States, but Kenya.” They also questioned his immigration policies, Libya, and Benghazi. Their fearless leader in the Senate vowed to make him a one-term president. Meanwhile the Russians sat back and laughed, their plan was working. Today, talk of impeachment engulfs our president, and again the Russians laugh. Their plan is still working, even better than…

Welcome to Dystopia

Dear Editor, Dystopia, Per Merriam Webster: an imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives. Dystopia is no longer an imagined society or world coming full speed our way. Just take a look at the misery and suffering of the millions of homeless on the streets of our once great nation. Look closely at the once great state of California and the conditions there. The politicians who believe in societal engineering and the rewards of socialism are still proud, if you can believe that, of the condition of their state. It can take a while to…

It’s the electoral college’s fault

Dear Editor, Did it ever occur to those who are incensed over this Trump impeachment fiasco, the entire thing could have been avoided, if not for the outdated electoral college system we have in this country? With it out of the picture, had the people’s choice actually prevailed, Hillary Clinton would have been president. Then, the Republicans could have been holding impeachment hearings on her!
