Budget reform shot down

MOHAVE COUNTY -A proposal to reduce the primary property tax rate and replace the revenue with a quarter cent sales tax died at Monday’s Mohave County board of supervisors meeting in Kingman. It was District 5 Supervisor Ron Gould who fired the missile that torpedoed the tax reform. Gould told board members he despises property taxes and supports the notion of reducing them through a sales tax hike. He explained, however, that he cannot support the plan because future boards of supervisors could unravel the current board’s intent and kick the property tax rate back up. “I’ve seen this happen. It happened in Lake Havasu…

The Colorado River sustains ecosystems and economies across the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. A number of operating rules and agreements within the United States and with the Republic of Mexico expire at the end of 2025. Recognizing the challenges facing the Colorado River Basin, in March of 2021, the Interior created a critical senior leadership position within the Bureau of Reclamation to lead development of the…

New Filiberto’s on pause

KINGMAN – Kingman area residents historically have enthusiastically bull rushed a new business, particularly eateries, but they’ll have to wait until July to dine in the new Filiberto’s store next to Dutch Bros on Stockton Hill Road. City officials said a Certificate of Occupancy for the 2,400 sq. ft. building issued on May 20. The completed store, however, sits vacant without signage and its windows are free of any information about a timetable for opening or employment opportunity. The Filiberto’s ghost town stands in stark contrast to Dutch Bros next door, which bustled with hiring and training activity in advance…
