Armed elementary school intruder pleads not guilty

KINGMAN – The man who allegedly trespassed a north Mohave County elementary school campus while armed with various weapons last month has been arraigned at the Law and Justice Center in Kingman. Not guilty pleas were entered March 5 on behalf of Jared Pipkin, 32, Colorado City.

Pipkin is charged with criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and interfering with an educational institution. The Cottonwood Elementary School in Colorado City was placed in precautionary lockdown when students spotted a man with a compound bow at about 1 p.m. on Feb. 18.

A probable cause statement said the subject advised arriving Colorado City police officers that he was just crossing the property. It said police tased the man after he said he was going to draw the bow and he failed to comply with commands to drop to his knees.

The incident ended with the arrest of the man subsequently identified as Pipkin. No one was injured.

The statement said police seized the bow and two arrows from Pipkin. It said officers also confiscated a machete and sheath and a throwing star and arrowhead with sharpened edges from Pipkin.

Pipkin reportedly told police he was armed for self-defense. He’s held in the Adult Detention Center on $5,000 bond, pending a March 26 pretrial conference.
