Peace and Literacy

Dear Editor,

September not only heralds the infamously lovely harvest moon which is to be October 1. September is also National Literacy month and Sept. 8 is International Literacy Day.

But wait … there’s more! In 1981 the United Nations chose September to commemorate the International Day of Peace (IDOP). However, in 2002 the date Sept. 21 was declared as the permanent IDOP. Go online for background info on these three events. Note: Other events are honorably recognized as well in September; however, this article will be limited to the issues of peace and literacy.

Ordinarily, in Kingman there is an event in a park on Sept. 21 to recognize IDOP. However, due to COVID-19, there will be no such formal event. There is a way for you to participate in a worldwide recognition as follows: at noon on Sept. 21 stop what you are doing, silently reflect on the essence and meaning of peace, and send your positive peaceful energy to our bruised world.

Interestingly peace and literacy are commemorated in the same month. Literacy is a key factor to reduce poverty. When poverty is reduced then conflicts are greatly reduced as well and peace can gain a foothold. The two initiatives marry extremely well. Stay healthy and happy.
