Dear Editor, September not only heralds the infamously lovely harvest moon which is to be October 1. September is also National Literacy month and Sept. 8 is International Literacy Day. But wait … there’s more! In 1981 the United Nations chose September to commemorate the International Day of Peace (IDOP). However, in 2002 the date Sept. 21 was declared as the permanent IDOP. KINGMAN – After starting the Kingman Area Literacy Program (KALP) seven years ago, director Chris Meisenheimer is retiring. “I started this program because teaching people to read is one of the best ways to lift them out of poverty,” said Meisenheimer. “Literacy’s value cannot be underestimated.” KALP tutors provide free tutoring to people of all ages, abilities and needs. KINGMAN – The City of Kingman Community Development Division has been working with Lisa Wise consulting for the past year to update the City of Kingman Zoning Code and expand the Downtown Historic Overlay District. The anticipated date of project completion is December 2020 or January 2021 and the city encourages public participation and input.
