Dear Editor,
I have heard a lot of gossip around town that all of our Kingman grocery stores have stopped giving near or out of date meat and produce to the food banks and are instead throwing it all out in the garbage. I sincerely hope this is not true. All of our local food banks, including those run by some of the churchs, have had more and more people coming to them for help. Between more people moving to Kingman, the federal problem with SNAP and the cost of food these days, we have a perfect storm.
None of the food banks can keep up with the demand. Some of the churches are having to go into their own funds to help feed hungry people. If this is the truth, why are the grocery stores picking this particular time to start throwing away good food? Why wouldn’t the grocery stores just have the food banks and churches sign an Arizona Release of Liability if liability is what they are worried about? Does anyone know if this is true and if so, do you know why? I, for one, would really like to know.
