The fallacy in cherry picking

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

During the recent Trump administration’s U.S. Christian’s Jubilee held on the White House lawn (Trump did not attend), I watched with interest and concern. Some Christian speaker and participants believe Trump is divinely sanctioned. A strong belief amongst Christian Nationalists. They compare Trump’s life to that of Jesus (?!?), and that of the prophets of old and great and powerful men with flaws yet God uses them for the good.

Like that of King Cyrus, who I named my oldest son after for being a Russian yet showed mercy and compassion for the Israelites or my son with the namesake of the prophet Elijah that regardless of his personal struggles this prophet rose above it all to serve God.

But with that said, I see none of this in Trump; he hurst countries and peoples, in ways that are not necessary and goes against all the teachings of Jesus. And there are Christians that do not agree with any of what Christina Nationalists believe about Donald J. Trump.

I am one of them. I’ve never seen any signs of possible divineness in him or doing good regardless how many Bibles Trump has sold made in China with his name embossed on each one in cheap gold paint at the cost three times than the average King James Bible.

It’s like Trump’s once longtime friend Jessie Ventura said, “Donald is no more religious than I am and I’m an atheist … he just knows what sells.” All I know is this, Trump’s words and behaviors of the past and present do not set will with my spiritual sensibilities nor when House Speaker Mike Johnson said, “Rights are given by divine providence and God,” yet coming from Johnson knowing he is a Trump loyalist and a Christian Nationalist it was a three-fire alarm knowing how quickly government can take away rights from those they believe don’t deserve them. Incorporating religion into one’s persona life can be regarding and can work but with government it can be a slippery slope and dangerous.

Just as warned in the Bible and reminded in the novel made into a movie with Denzel Washington, ‘The Book of Eli,’ … if one can get control of the religious sector it can give them power over people in ways that can be manipulated for self-serving purposes and be used for evil.

Regardless how one sees it our founding fathers knew this and why it’s written in our Constitution prohibiting of “one” national religion.

And while Christian Nationalists want to make Christianity our national religion many Christians and others can see it for what it is: Another page out of Project 2025 (the Christian Nationalist’s playbook) to strip away Constitutional rights and lessen the rights of the marginalized that’ll only lead to further hate crimes. As it is, we had another deadly shooting at an Islamic center where children were playing. These assassins believe they’re a threat to our way of life even though Muslims respect and cherish the teaching of Jesus and blessed Mary and Muslim Americans live lives not different than Christian Americans. Yet have a target on their backs. Regardless most violent crimes are not committed by non-Christians. And what hasn’t helped matters is Trump’s first term he wanted to ban Muslims and their religion, and he would have it not for our Constitution. Eliminating peoples and religions is not the way to change the world. Period.

Yet now we have a certain sector of states are being stripped of their voices at the voting polls. Which once again is Project 2025 trying to stop Americans from using their voice and voting power and try to disrupt our Constitutional rights while using church doctrine to justify what they do when all it is, is a fallacy distorting the teachings of Christ and it is not going unnoticed.  Those who believe in the God given rights of our Constitutions are calling it out. As one protest sign read, “You Can Cherry Pick the Bible But You Can’t Cherry Pick the Constitution.”

J.M.
