Report card out on COVID-19 case positivity rate

MOHAVE COUNTY – Gyms, bars and some water business enterprises that have remain shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic could get a reprieve Thursday. Mohave County has already met two of three benchmarks allowing them to reopen under various restrictions and regulations.

“What we haven’t been meeting is the percent positivity number put out by the state. Last week it was at 9.5%, which is just under 10%,” city manager Toby Cotter said during Tuesday’s Bullhead City council meeting. “So, the number on Thursday, if it’s under 10%, all the gyms can reopen but they have to follow the rules.”

Council member Annette Wegmann, a fitness instructor for more than 35 years, said citizens need activity for their physical and mental well- being.

“It’s lifestyle. We need to get our adrenaline going, our endorphins, we need to work out. We need to keep moving,” Wegmann said. She encouraged owners and operators to submit compliance plans for waivers, given the chance that the positivity rate won’t be met Thursday. That’s how Maddog Fitness was able to open its doors in Bullhead City Thursday.

Wegmann called for unified support for providing merchants a reasonable opportunity to operate in a safe manner.

“Our main concern is our businesses, our small businesses and our small community closing. We don’t want that,” Wegmann said. “All I want is for us to come together as community leaders, as community members, to reach out to the Governor and chare our concerns about our businesses not being able to survive.”
