MOHAVE COUNTY – The Mohave College women’s soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 2–0 win over Cuyamaca College on Thursday, Aug. 20, in El Cajon, California. Courtney Howard, forward, opened the scoring in the 15th minute with assists from Brianne Kumashiro, midfielder, and Alayna Littlewood, midfielder. Sanyi Thompson, forward, added a second goal in the 87th minute with assists from Kwynn Tanita, forward, and Ella Knudsen, defender. Goalkeeper Jacky Claro made one save to record the shutout.
The Bighorns returned home Saturday, Aug. 22, falling 2–1 to Truckee Meadows Community College at Firebird Field. Mohave outshot Truckee Meadows 25–8. Truckee Meadows opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Estephanie Montiel-Silva, midfielder, tied the game in the 67th minute. Truckee Meadows scored the game-winning goal with three minutes remaining. The Bighorns finished the opening week with a 1–1 record.
“The game against Truckee Meadows was a good test that helped us recognize areas we want to be better at. The team worked very hard, but we recognize that may not be enough. It was a great lesson, and we definitely profited from it in our next match when we played Paradise Valley,” said Robert Podeyn, Women’s Head Coach. “The Truckee Meadows game brought us closer to our game and how we want to play. Every game is an opportunity; what you take from it should make you better and stronger. Our team grew from that game, and I believe we are a better team now.”
