Reply to Dennis C. Miller: Air Traffic Controllers were not allowed to strike

Dear Editor,

Mr. Miller forgot to mention Air Traffic Controllers were not allowed to strike, stated in their contract. When the individuals walked out President Reagan did fire them and set to hire individuals that would honor that contract.

This did not stop the employee’s from bargaining for better wages and benefits while still working. Look at the American Auto Industry always seeking higher and higher wages and benefits but building poorly assembled cars and trucks. The joke was: never buy a car built on a Monday or Friday. So Japanese cars became popular for their reliability and fuel economy.

Unions who once helped the American workers get better wages and benefits and safer working conditions shot themselves in the foot by becoming greedy and not providing quality products. Reply to Ms. Dianne Post: I remember way back in public school especially high school discussing current events with students without anyone getting bent out of shape.

Today when students and teachers leave their campus to protest they are only hurting themselves academic wise and betraying the trust parents put in their kids teacher to instruct them in math, English reading, writing, and spelling, science, history and current events, etc.

As a taxpayer I’m very disappointed in seeing poor reading and math scores and lack of interest in civics and science as well of our countries history. It is not a violation of a student’s 1st amendment rights to complete a full day of school. Before school, after school, and on weekends a student as well a teacher have a right to protest their cause but not on the taxpayers dime!

And to remind you Ms. Post since God has been taken out of public-school classrooms and many Fathers removed from the home by the welfare system maintaining order in the classroom has been another challenge. Also, our teachers should not be forced to teach gender identity and critical race theory.

Now Ms. J.M., your hatred towards our President is well documented in all your comments. If you read the United States Constitution you would see that tariffs are allowed to be put upon countries the United States trade with that put a high price on American exports to their country but expect lower or no tariffs on their exports to the United States. This trade imbalance affects American workers. Tariffs even the playing field so American goods can be sold at a competitive price to other nations.

Let’s not forget we have a higher standard of living in America compared to China who has a tendency to devalue their currency when they see fit. As far as our President goes he also has the 1st amendment right to criticize the U.S. Supreme Court on their ruling against tariffs as you saw in his State of the Union Address. Only a few members of the court had the guts to show up.

There was a time in our countries history when tariffs fully funded our government. Somewhere along the line the income tax came to be and to this day some feel the well-off are not taxed enough. Some claim they are taxed to much. If their wealth was taken away, (socialism), and given to the less fortunate it would not support everyone by a long shot!

The good thing about America is if you work hard you can make a good life for yourself and family and still help other citizens in need!
