Repeat offender sentenced after assaulting officers

David Sterling

LAKE HAVASU CITY – A 250-day jail sentence has been imposed for a Lake Havasu City man who scuffled with police at a local night spot. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert also placed David Sterling, 32, on probation for three years and directed him to perform 200 hours of community work service.

Judge Lambert said Sterling was asked to leave after he touched a woman inappropriately inside Kokomo’s on June 8. Lake Havasu police officers arriving to assist security in trespassing Sterling from the property ended up in a battle.

“When the officers came you gave them quite a good fight,” said Lambert, during the August 19 sentencing hearing.

Prosecutor Jim Ferlmann said Sterling put up a “vigorous fight”, bloodying the nose of one officer and taking another to the ground.

While reading the pre-sentence report Judge Lambert recited Sterling’s extensive criminal history, replete with assault, fighting, disorderly conduct, criminal damage, burglary, shoplifting and illegal camping offenses. Lambert said that Sterling has served a number of jail sentences for one felony and 26 misdemeanor convictions.

“You’ve done it over and over and over again,” Lambert said. “I don’t think anything has worked.”
