NPS announces enhanced traffic safety operations at Lake Mead area

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — Law enforcement agencies will saturate Lake Mead National Recreation Area roadways Nov. 8-9 with enhanced traffic enforcement aimed at reducing speeding, impaired driving and other dangerous violations.

Traffic enforcement operations will be conducted by the National Park Service, with assistance from the Bureau of Land Management.

Officers will focus on speed enforcement, impaired driving detection, seat belt compliance and other traffic violations that pose safety risks to visitors and park users. The operation will place special emphasis on motorcycle safety.

Lake Mead’s winding roads and scenic routes attract significant motorcycle traffic, particularly during fall weekends. Officers will be watching for unsafe riding behaviors, lane splitting violations, proper licensing and helmet compliance. Motorcyclists are reminded to ride defensively, wear appropriate safety gear and remain visible to other drivers.

“The safety of our visitors is our top priority at Lake Mead National Recreation Area,” said Chief Ranger Mike Garel. “This collaborative effort with the Bureau of Land Management demonstrates our commitment to ensuring everyone can enjoy the park safely. We’re asking all visitors to slow down, buckle up and drive like a tortoise.”

Lake Mead NRA encompasses more than 1.5 million acres and receives approximately 6 million visitors annually. The park’s scenic roadways and proximity to Las Vegas make it a popular destination for weekend recreation.

Visitors are reminded to obey all posted speed limits, avoid distracted driving and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
