Mosquito control update: surveillance leads to agriculture aerial fogging

Mohave County – Mosquito surveillance conducted this week by the Mohave County Environmental Health Division (MCEHD) revealed several agricultural locations that met the CDC’s protocol to conduct mosquito control. Designated areas will have adult insecticide treatment using an Ultra Low Volume (ULV) fogging applied by the air using a low flying airplane.

Aerial applications provide a greater opportunity to reduce mosquito populations in hard to reach agricultural areas. Applications are applied weather permitting and do not include materials known to be harmful to humans, animals or other insects when applied according to the product label.

SCHEDULE:  Aerial application will begin at dawn on Friday, August 2nd weather permitting. Twin Eagle Aviation was awarded the contract to provide adult aerial insecticide services within Mohave County and will be conducting this application in designated farm areas in Mohave Valley to include:

· Section 1: Agricultural area south of River Valley High School and Mohave Valley Park. Maverick Dr. South to Reservation Road, and Mountain View Road east to Vanderslice Road.

· Section 7: Reservation Road south to Courtwright Road, Vanderslice Road east to Ranchero Lane.

· Section 13: Agricultural area located from Jerome Avenue south to Hulet Avenue and Aquarius Drive east to Vanderslice Road.

·Section 31: Willow Dr. south to Laguna Road, Vanderslice Road east to Ranchero Lane.

The insecticide being used is Duet. This product is a combination of synthetic pyrethrins, a natural insecticide from chrysanthemum flowers.  Pyrethrins are used on a wide variety of food and feed crops to control insects and on lawns, ornamental gardens and golf courses. Public health uses it for controlling mosquitos and mosquito-borne illnesses.

PRECAUTIONS: The Environmental Protection Agency recommends the following steps to help reduce possible exposure to insecticides during spraying:

  • Whenever possible, remain indoors with windows closed
  • You might consider turning off your air conditioning turned when spraying is taking place.
  • If you are outdoors, avoid eye contact with the spray. If you can’t avoid contact, rinse your skin and eyes with water.
  • Cover outside items like furniture and grills while spraying is occurring. Cover swimming pool surfaces when feasible.  Special precautions or waiting periods are not usually necessary for outdoor swimming pools.
  • Bring your pets and items like pet food dishes and children’s toys indoors.
  • Wash exposed fruits and vegetables, such as homegrown or purchased from an outside vendor, with water before storing, cooking, or eating them.
  • If you think pesticides are making you sick, seek medical attention as necessary.

Individuals with questions about pesticides should call the National Pesticide Information Center at 1-800-858-7378 from 6:30 am – 4:30 pm PST. The NPIC is staffed by trained pesticide specialists who have toxicology and environmental chemistry education and training needed to provide answers to pesticide questions. Individuals with questions about the aerial fogging should call the Mohave County Environmental Health Division at (928) 758-0704.
