Medrano gets five years for child sex offenses

BULLHEAD CITY – An elderly Bullhead City sex offender offered apology at his Aug. 2 sentencing hearing. Raymond Medrano, 70, previously pleaded guilty to four counts reduced to attempted sexual conduct with a minor.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Amanda Claerhout told the Court that Medrano engaged in illegal sexual activity with girls 12 and 16 years of age between Jan. 1, 2023 and early March, 2024.

“I’m sorry. This will never happen again,” Medrano told Judge Billy Sipe. “I hope everybody forgives me.”

Medrano supporters including Defense attorney Paul Amann urged Judge Sipe to lean on the lower end of the five- to 15-year prison term range mandated in the plea deal.

“Ray has taken responsibility right from the start,” Amann said. “He’s taken a plea that will make him answerable to the justice system here in Arizona.’’

Claerhout asked for imposition of the maximum 15-year prison term.

“What the defendant did to these girls is heinous,” she said.

Judge Sipe said he typically imposes longer prison terms in cases similar to Medrano’s. Yet, he said he must respect leniency requests from members of the victim’s family and other Medrano supporters.

Judge Sipe ordered a five-year prison term followed by lifetime probation.
