KINGMAN – The vintage Las Vegas Boulevard Cupid’s Wedding Chapel neon will be renovated into Kingman’s newest roadside landmark in February 2024. The sign will be located 200 feet west of the famous Route 66 Drive Thru Shield, directly across Route 66 from Dunton Motors Dream Machines in Downtown Kingman.
The sign cabinet came into the possession of the late Scott Dunton, whose last name is behind the ‘D’ in the famous Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner. Dunton donated the sign to the City of Kingman before he passed earlier this year. It will be renovated to sport neon lettering with marquee lights that will read “Kingman, Heart of Historic Route 66”, a moto Kingman has boasted since 1993. The project was awarded to Legacy Signs & Iron of Kingman, AZ and sign restoration is currently underway.
Kingman will throw a special Valentine’s themed dedication between 5:30 and 7:30 on February 9, the Friday before Valentine’s Day which is also National Giving Hearts Day. The inaugural lighting ceremony will take place at sunset, approximately 6:15. But the festivities don’t end with the lighting ceremony.
“The sign has heart with an arrow going through it, and everything’s coming together just in time for Valentine’s Day! How could we not plan something around that?” said Katie Barthlow of the Kingman Office of Tourism.
In a nod to the sign’s symbolic heart and arrow, event planners have arranged for up to three lucky couples to tie the knot Vegas-style, officiated by none other than a Las Vegas Elvis-inspired master of ceremonies.
If you and your significant other have yet to say “I do,” possess a compelling love story, and envision making February 9 a day to remember, the Kingman Office of Tourism invites you to reach out at kbarthlow@cityofkingman.gov with “Get Hitched on 66” in the subject line. Self-nominations are being accepted through January, exclusively from the couples themselves. Those selected will need to arrange and purchase their wedding certificates through the Mohave County Superior Court.
