Kingman Rotary Club “Dictionary Project” Delivers Dictionaries to Local Schools for 20th Year

KINGMAN –– The Kingman Route 66 Rotary Club has announced the successful delivery of 696 dictionaries to third graders across the greater Kingman area as part of the club’s participation in The Dictionary Project.

This year’s recipients include students in the following locations:  Kingman Unified School District, Kingman Academy, Emmanuel Christian Academy, Yucca, Dolan Springs, Cedar Hills, Peach Springs, and Valentine schools. Rotary Club members present the dictionaries in each classroom. The presentation includes an overview of Rotary and the 4-Way Test and we play games using their dictionaries.

Some of the student favorites are the longest word, the skeleton, the States and the sign language. These books are more than dictionaries and are more like a mini encyclopedia.     Rotary members have heard stories over the years that include: “this is my first book of my own”, “my sister still has her dictionary, and she is in college now”, and “I will always take care of this book”. These stories and thank you notes the club receives are heartwarming.

In addition to the dictionaries, the club also donated Rotary-branded pencils. This marks the 20th consecutive year of Kingman Route 66 Rotary Club’s participation in The Dictionary Project, and since August 2006, the Kingman Route 66 Rotary Club has delivered a remarkable total of 14,808 dictionaries to our local students.

The Dictionary Project, a national initiative, aims to provide students with their own personal dictionary to promote literacy and learning. The Dictionary Project is a charitable organization based in Charleston, South CarolinaU.S.A., and was founded in 1995 to provide personal copies of a dictionary for third grade students in the South Carolina public school system. It has grown into a national organization. To date, over 35 million dictionaries have been donated to children in the United States and internationally.  It is funded through individual donations, civic organizations and by sponsors who implement the program in their local schools. The Kingman Route 66 Rotary Club is honored to contribute to this mission and support local education.
