Kingman is enforcing storage container regulations

KINGMAN – The City of Kingman is issuing a reminder to residents and businesses regarding the city’s zoning code on storage containers, which was last updated in 2021. “These guidelines aim to ensure the proper use of storage containers while maintaining safety, functionality, and the visual integrity of the community.  Property owners are encouraged to familiarize themselves with this portion of the zoning code and obtain any necessary permits to maintain compliance,” Jason Moquin, the City’s Development Services Director, stated.
For residential properties, permanent storage containers are allowed under specific conditions. Only one container per lot is permitted, and it must not exceed 20 feet in size. These containers must be located behind the primary residence, out of public view, and painted to match the home’s exterior unless fully screened from the street. These measures are designed to preserve the aesthetic character of residential neighborhoods while accommodating the need for additional storage.
In commercial and industrial zones, permanent storage containers are permitted with certain requirements. Containers may be larger, up to 40 feet, and must be placed behind the main building or screened from public view using approved fencing or other materials. If screening is not feasible, the exterior of the container must be modified to blend with the primary structure, ensuring a cohesive appearance. Stacking of containers is not permitted; however, multiple containers may be positioned adjacent to each other, provided they adhere to the lot coverage and placement standards.
Temporary storage containers are allowed for short-term use, such as during emergencies or minor construction projects, with a valid Temporary Use Permit. Duration limits vary by zone, and property owners must ensure containers are properly placed to avoid obstructing public rights-of-way.
The City also reminds residents and business owners that permanent storage containers are prohibited in recreational open space zones to protect the natural and recreational value of these areas. Additionally, containers mounted on wheels or trailers cannot be used as permanent or temporary storage structures in any zone.  Lastly no signs are permitted to be placed on any part of a storage container.
The City of Kingman appreciates the cooperation of residents and businesses in following these regulations, which contribute to a safer and more visually appealing community.
