Kingman honors Detroit Tigers pitcher, Tarik Skubal, with keys to the city

KINGMAN – The City of Kingman celebrated one of its own, Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, in a special ceremony prior to the City Council meeting last night. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, Kingman Mayor Ken Watkins presented Tarik with a Key to the City, as well as a proclamation highlighting his remarkable career.

The proclamation detailed Tarik’s inspiring journey, which began on the baseball fields of Kingman Academy of Learning, where he achieved a perfect game. He later joined the Seattle RedHawks college baseball team, overcoming significant challenges, including a torn UCL, to build an impressive record of wins and strikeouts. Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2018, Tarik has soared to extraordinary heights in his professional career, earning him top recognition as the 2024 American League (AL) Cy Young Award winner and Triple Crown recipient.  “His remarkable accomplishments have instilled pride and joy within the City of Kingman, and his dedication and resilience serve as a source of inspiration for young athletes everywhere,” Mayor Watkins stated during the ceremony.

The evening was made even more memorable when Tarik presented a $10,000 check to the Kingman Little League, a touching demonstration of his gratitude to the community that helped shape him. Little League players in attendance were thrilled to meet him, as Tarik graciously stayed afterward to sign autographs and take photos. “Tarik’s achievements remind us of what can be accomplished through determination and hard work. His generosity toward the Kingman Little League ensures the next generation of players will have the support they need to pursue their dreams,” added Mayor Watkins.
