How do you say it?

Dear Editor,

As Christmas approaches, I am reminded of the joy in saying Merry Christmas. It is more than a seasonal phrase, it is a wish for peace, kindness, and goodwill that transcends differences.

Some prefer Happy Holidays, recognizing the many celebrations that fill December—Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, and more. Others hold fast to Merry Christmas, cherishing its tradition. The truth is that both greetings spring from the same spirit: a desire to share joy and extend goodwill.

Too often, politics and division creep into every corner of our lives. But this season is not about political statements. It is about neighbors greeting one another warmly, families gathering, and communities remembering what unites us.

Whether we say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, the heart of the message is the same: compassion, unity, and hope. May we carry that spirit into the new year—choosing kindness over conflict, and goodwill over division.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and peace to all!
