Havasu local seeks volunteers for public reads of Declaration of Independence at July 4 celebration

american flag

LAKE HAVASU CITY – With this year’s fast-approaching semiquincentennial, Lake Havasu resident and former politician Bob Barrett is inviting members of the community to participate in  public readings of 1776’s Declaration of Independence. Moving from Minnesota to Havasu about five years ago, Barrett had retired as an analyst of the Betty Ford Foundation and came from an upbringing with a father who was very vocal about patriotism. It was through his influence that he grew to admire three historic leaders who referenced the momentous testimony throughout eras. “Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and John F. Kennedy have each referenced the Declaration of Independence in their lifetime,” Barrett said.

These were key leaders who inspired Barrett’s his own career in politics. He also served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2011 to 2016. Currently, he is seeking 10 volunteers to do oral presentations of the statement of freedom. Preferred participants can be active or retired veterans, grade school to college students, and all residents of Havasu are encouraged to join. Prior to the event, Barrett has aspirations to print out a copy of the document this where people can meet him in a public space to sign it this coming June.

The goal will be to capture as many signatures as possible to be displayed at the event. Barrett is also seeking donations of podiums, mics, and speakers, so that everyone’s voices can be heard on the warm summer morning to honor American freedoms. Reading of the Declaration of Independence will be taking place on Saturday, July 4 at 8 a.m. on the London Bridge stage, 1340 McCulloch Blvd N.

Feeling that it is his mission to bring this event to life, the years of living in Havasu has taught Barrett that many residents of the community share a common bond, which is national loyalty. “Havasu is a very patriotic town and I have felt this strong calling for many years now to create this so that it will bring many people together to capture a great memory of America turning 250 years old in just a few months,” Barrett added. If you’re someone who is ready to be part of history and volunteer in the readings, signups to participate can be done by emailing Barrett directly at lifeliberty250@gmail.com.
