Fishing for Smiles signups coming up

KINGMAN – The annual Fishing for Smiles event just outside Kingman will be held on two separate days this year. Special Needs Day will be Tuesday, May 12 and will be catch-and-release. Youth Day will be Saturday, May 16 and kids will be able to keep up to three fish.

The fishing day is open to all Kingman-area youth and members of the special needs community and organizations. A parent or guardian must be present but participants must do the fishing. Volunteers will be available to assist participants with provided poles and bait at both event days. A fish-cleaning station will be available on Youth Day only. Fishing starts at 8 a.m. and finishes up at 1 a.m., with a barbecue lunch to follow. Snacks and refreshments will also be provided throughout the morning.

Youth Day participants are allowed to keep up to three fish each and trophies will be awarded for longest fish, heaviest fish, and heaviest stringer. Additional outdoor activities and educational exhibits will be on-site to enjoy. Sitting areas and shade are limited; it is suggested that families bring lawn chairs, sunscreen, hats, etc.

This free event traditionally fills up quickly and pre-registration is strongly suggested.

Pre-registration will be held April 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Smith’s Grocery store. Pre-registration may also be completed at the Kingman Elks Lodge, 900 Gates Ave., 928-753-3557. The last day to pre-registered providing space is still available is May 1.

The event location is the Dunton Ranch at Fort Rock Road and I-40. From Kingman, drive east on I40 to Fort Rock Rd (Exit 91). Turn left and continue 200 yards to Dunton Road. Turn left through the gate and follow the signs.

Sponsors include the Elks Lodge, Kingman Regional Medical Center, Mohave Sportsmans Club, and Arizona Game and Fish.
