Father who exposed children to drugs gets probation

Interior of courtroom

KINGMAN – Three children absorbed illegal drugs that a Kingman man consumed in his home in the 1900 block of Motor Avenue. Jacob Goslaw, 28, was charged with three counts of child abuse for methamphetamine and cocaine detected in hair follicle testing of children 2, 3 and 5 years of age.

“We realize that no child should ever test positive for dangerous drugs,” defense attorney Ross Carponelli said during a June 20 change of plea hearing. “We need to look deeper, not to excuse, at what happened.”

Carponelli said Goslaw’s drug addiction blurred his perception, eroded his judgment and removed him from the reality of his endangerment of the children when he used drugs in his garage and a restroom.

The Kingman Police Department assisted the Arizona Department of Child Services in the case against Goslaw and his partner Brandy Simons, 28. Simons also entered a plea agreement and awaits sentencing on July 10.

Goslaw pleaded guilty to one count of abuse involving his three-year-old daughter. He told Judge Billy Sipe he didn’t understand how the children had drugs in their system.

“They weren’t home when I would do it,” Goslaw said of his drug usage. “I tried to hide in the bathroom.”

“I really want to put you in jail,” Sipe told Goslaw. He refrained from doing so to allow the defendant to continue his drug counseling in pursuit of sobriety, as well as his efforts to regain custody of his children.

“Thanks for not putting me in jail,” Goslaw said.

Judge Sipe placed Goslaw on probation for three years.
