DV strangler gets probation, 120 days

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Involved attorneys and a judge agreed that the supervision that comes along with probation is a better path than prison for a Lake Havasu City man who racked up a string of criminal charges last fall.

Dru Bunce, 28, was reportedly impaired when he allegedly broke back into a Chalon Drive home at about 12:19 a.m. on Nov. 23, 2025 and assaulted and strangled a woman who lost consciousness.

A police report indicated responding officers observed various injuries and that the woman told them Bunce screamed profanities as he assaulted and choked her. Witnesses reportedly indicated that Bunce had been kicked out of the residence before he reentered though a window.

Bunce drove from the scene but was later arrested during a traffic stop on Havasupai Boulevard. Officer-observed impairment prompted a DUI arrest and drug charges were tacked on when detention officers found cocaine and methamphetamine in his possession during his jail booking.

A number of charges are dismissed in the plea agreement convicting Bunce of aggravated assault by domestic violence. He offered apology and pledged commitment to positive change during his March 30 sentencing hearing.

Judge Lee Jantzen placed Bunce on probation for three years and encouraged him to avail himself of counseling and improvement programs to improve his attitude and conquer his substance abuse challenges.

“Hopefully you can stay away from drugs and alcohol,” he said. Jantzen imposed a 120-day jail sentence and directed Bunce to perform 70 hours of community work service.
