Copper Hay Co.

Copper Hay Co. began in Bagdad, Arizona, where owners Derrick and Melissa Betts saw an opportunity to help rural families. Many families only need one or two bales of hay per week for their one horse, they noticed, but these owners often had to order greater quantities than they needed and pay extra for shipping. Copper Hay Co. was born out of a desire to meet the demand of these rural families.

The company has now expanded to Kingman, where it will provide the same convenience to communities here and in Golden Valley. In fact, the company is driven by a motto known as the three C’s: Community, Comfort, and Convenience. So far, their values have translated into a successful business that provides value for the community.

“God has blessed us in so many ways,” Derrick says. “We wanted to spread that blessing to Kingman in 2025.”

As the hay business grew, customers began to ask about other products such as pet food. Some of the pet food that Copper Hay Co. now offers comes from wholesalers in Texas and California, but also includes a few in Arizona such as the Maricopa-based company Sacate Pellet Mills.

Community is important to Derrick and Melissa, which is why they chose to open a second location in Kingman. The couple has roots here, which includes their two children that have each competed in sports like gymnastics.

Copper Hay Co’s new location is near Locomotive Park on Beale Street in a building owned by the Dunton family.  Derrick and Melissa intend to expand the products offered by the business to include produce and meat. The goal is to create a general store in downtown Kingman that can serve as a primary destination for ranchers, animal lovers, and others in the community.

The space can also accommodate live events—an option they are exploring. As the business grows, they may add food and beverage offerings like coffee and tea. The store already offers certain food products from family owned and veteran-owned businesses like Wild Bill Soda,  General’s Hot Sauce, and Patriot Soap.

Copper Hay Co. is located at 110 E. Beale St. in downtown Kingman. For more information, visit the website at copperhay.co, or call 928-897-4265. The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and is closed on Sunday.
