City of Kingman selects seven people for golf commission

KINGMAN – Seven people have been selected for appointment to Kingman’s newly established Golf Advisory Commission. The City Council spent nearly a half-hour in executive session during its March 18 meeting reviewing applications submitted by 29 people, the most commission contenders anyone can recall.

Vice Mayor Cherish Sammeli offered separate appointment nominations that were quickly approved when the Council meeting resumed. The appointments involve different increments of service time, to create staggered terms for the Commission.

Retiree Carole O’Connor, retired law enforcement officer Brendan Page and mortgage lender Ricky Johnson will serve through December 31, 2026. Appointed to terms ending December 31, 2028 are retired fire chief Patrick Moore, retired Department of Defense and Interior employee David Dale, former golf professional and golf retail store manager Todd Ottenschot and Sean Lawson, a property investor who previously worked in construction and contracting.

The applications reflect a cumulative concern over management and conditions at the Cerbat Cliffs municipal golf course, and a commitment to strive for improvement.

“Cerbat Cliffs has deteriorated over the past 10 + years,” Lawson stated. “I would like to be part of the solution.”

“Golfers do not feel that their concerns are being heard,” Dale said in his application. “I would like to take a more proactive approach and be part of the solution to rectify the observed issues and challenges.”

Clerk Annie Meredith said creation of the golf-focused entity brings to nine the number of advisory Commissions engaged by the City, along with two municipal boards. She said the Golf Advisory Commission will meet at noon on the second Monday of every other month, starting April 14.

That first meeting will be organizational in nature with the Commission selecting a Chair and Vice Chair. They’ll also be provided training in Arizona Open Meeting Law and handle any matters that staff might place on the meeting agenda.
