Bullhead teen enters second plea for drive-by shooting incident

BULLHEAD CITY — A Bullhead City teenager charged in a drive-by shooting entered a plea agreement on November 7 in an attempt to resolve his case short of trial. Brendon Laflair, 19, pleaded guilty to an aggravated assault charge for the May 14 incident at the River Springs apartments at 1775 Arriba Drive.

Police allege that Laflair and case co-defendant Madilyn Hammarstedt, 20, traveled to the apartments in a dispute involving the father of Hammarstedt’s child. Hammarstedt reportedly recently moved out of the complex before the May 14 encounter.

Deputy Mohave County attorney Melinda Bonson said a woman outside the complex had to take cover under an automobile as 13 shots were fired from the Laflair/Hammarstedt vehicle when the pair arrived between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m.

No one was hurt by the gunfire.

Judge Billy Sipe refused to approve the plea deal during an October 30 hearing because Laflair denied that he fired any shots. He again denied firing shots during the second change of plea hearing, but he admitted driving to the complex knowing that a drive-by shooting would occur.

Sipe deferred accepting and entering the plea agreement until a December 5 sentencing hearing. He’ll reject the deal if he feels Laflair’s admissions are insufficient to warrant an aggravated assault conviction.

Laflair faces a 2-8.75-year prison term if judge Sipe approves the plea deal. Hammarstedt’s case is pending.
