BOS workshop: Gurtler, Angius banter over budget

MOHAVE COUNTY – A pair of powerful elected officials had some intense exchanges during the budget workshop Mohave County Supervisors conducted on Thursday, March 14. The sharpness of the banter between Supervisor Hildy Angius and Presiding Judge Charles Gurtler caught others by surprise. Angius expressed concern about various raises proposed for court staff, including directors in Court Finance and Human Resources. Gurtler noted many court system positions have been under compensated for a long period of time. “It’s really hard to stomach having court employees being the bastard step-children in the county,” Gurtler said. He said court staff suffers while…

Bullhead Elementary seeking parent input about school year options

BULLHEAD CITY – With the likelihood that some level of COVID-19 restrictions impacting schools will remain in place through the summer, the Bullhead City Elementary School District is asking parents and guardians to share opinions about options for the new school year, which is scheduled to start July 29.  The online survey is on the District website, www.crsk12.org, where it is available in English and Spanish.  The direct link is at https://www.crsk12.org/recent_announcements/bcesd_parent__family_survey. “Our teachers have been planning for instruction, and our administrators have begun planning the reopening of school buildings,” said Superintendent Carolyn Stewart.  “Even though Gov. Ducey has rescinded…

Culmination of opinions is diverse

I, for one, appreciate The Standard’s policy of printing letters from readers who want to express their opinions on varying subjects. Allen’s letter from the May 6 edition amusing and quite questionable when she writes, “I am also concerned with the low-income students who are attending our state’s private schools.” I wonder how many low-income families can afford private learning institutions for their children. Then there is the letter writer who opines as she, “understands it, under crisis…

Eighth Street project underway

KINGMAN – Work has begun on the Eight Street underpass drainage and roadway improvement project recently, which will reduce storm water runoff, reduce the duration of ponding, and limit the deposit of storm debris under the underpass, which will allow the underpass to be reopened to traffic sooner after a major storm event. The total cost of the project is $479,000, and a large part of that funding will be paid through a grant the city of Kingman was awarded from the Hazard Mitigation Assistance Program administered by the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (AZDEMA). Full street closures…
