KINGMAN, Ariz. – A Kingman man could be sentenced to the Arizona Department of Corrections after pleading guilty for assaulting a woman before confronting police with a gun. Shane Peterson, 51, is convicted of three aggravated assault-related charges.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Jeremy Braunstein told Mohave County Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle that an argument at an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Hualapai Mountain Road escalated, with Peterson striking a woman in the face with a crock pot, resulting in injuries from hot food on May 9.

Kingman Police Chief Rusty Cooper reported in a news release that Peterson brandished a firearm when police arrived. He said officers retreated and took cover before Mohave County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team personnel responded.

“Peterson, who was believed to be heavily intoxicated and in possession of multiple firearms, barricaded himself inside the apartment and refused to comply with commands to exit peacefully,” Cooper said. “After approximately four and a half hours of negotiations and multiple attempts to secure a peaceful surrender, including use of gas inside the apartment, Peterson was taken into custody.”

Police Sgt. Jason Huerta told Judge Carlisle that Peterson is lucky he was not shot during the ordeal. He said that the defendant endangered the entire apartment complex.

Terms of the plea deal entered July 23 allow for the possibility of probation, but Peterson also faces up to 8.5 years in prison when sentenced Aug. 24.
