Arizona’s health department has named the first statewide heat officer to address extreme heat

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona’s health department has named a physician to address ways to lessen the effects of extreme heat in the arid Southwestern state as the first statewide heat officer in the nation. Dr. Eugene Livar was appointed to the role under Gov. Katie Hobbs’ extreme heat preparedness plan, the Arizona Department of Health Services said Wednesday. Livar has been with the state health department since 2012, most recently working as assistant director for public health preparedness. In that role, he contributed to the state’s heat plan. BULLHEAD CITY – Several Bullhead City School District (BCSD) campuses were placed on lockdown Thursday morning while Bullhead City Police officers investigated an alleged threat targeting a Bullhead City Middle School (BCMS) student based upon an online social media post.  Students and faculty were never endangered, and the lockdowns followed standard procedures for their protection. Judge tosses challenge of Arizona programs that teach non-English speaking students

PHOENIX (AP) — A judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Arizona’s schools chief that challenged programs that some school districts use to teach non-English speaking students. Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne argued dual language programs – in which students spend half the day learning English and the other half focusing on another language — violate a 2000 voter-approved law that requires those students to be taught only in English, KJZZ radio reported. LITTLEFIELD – The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is closing a 2018 double homicide investigation because the man believed to be responsible has been dead for more than nine months. The bodies of Jerry and Susan McFalls, both 62, were recovered from a shallow grave in the Virgin River Gorge on Oct. 15, 2018. The couple was reported missing in Jan., 2018 when they could not be located in their home though their phones, guns, money, medications and identifications were located on the property.
