Special needs children can learn through playing at nonprofit’s madness week

LAKE HAVASU CITY — Milemarkers will be kicking up recreation and imagination for their members at their upcoming Madness Week. The Milemarkers nonprofit was founded by Colleen McShea and Catie Sondrol in 2007. McShea was a speech pathologist and Sondrol was then an occupational therapist.

Their journey took off when the two teamed up to provide care for children with disabilities in their homes.

When the facility finally opened, it was filled with supportive resources like music and occupational therapy, afterschool programs, and a variety of helpful ways to assist their members. As their clientele began to grow, the organization relocated to a bigger building in 2024.

Last March, the charity launched their first educational week called Spring Staycation.

Eager to put together engaging activities for community members and Milemarkers families, the idea was sparked between pediatrics managers and the marketing team. The five-day event will give the children a chance to participate in a variety of fun-filled tasks like obstacle courses, creating marshmallow shamrocks, sidewalk chalk creations using elephant and snake bubbles, and much more.

A full list of Madness week can be seen by visiting Facebook/Milemarkers fun.

The events are scheduled to happen beginning Monday March 16 through Friday March 20 at 5601 AZ-95 Suite C-308. Milemarkers marketing manager Natalie Rogers maintains that the week is designed to encourage members to be active and provide knowledge that is physically therapeutic. “Learning through play is in each day’s activity. It reflects on Milemarkers therapeutic belief in skill building through fun movement, creativity, and social interaction while showcasing Milemarkers programs and environment,” Rogers said.

The marketing manager also thinks that each day is rewarding, as she gets the opportunity to see how the children’s participation lifts their spirits. “The kids just think they’re having a blast but every activity is secretly building skills like coordination, problem-solving, and confidence. That’s the magic,” Rogers added.

The week is also designed to give parents a chance to request information or schedule a free developmental screening which includes a tour of the facility, and a great way to meet the Milemarkers team.
