Governor Hobbs proclaims September Arizona Preparedness Month

PHOENIX—Governor Katie Hobbs proclaimed September Arizona Preparedness Month in conjunction with National Preparedness Month in an effort to encourage people, businesses and communities to prepare for potential emergencies.

This year, the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA) is rallying Arizonans under the theme: “Game On! Are You Two-Weeks Ready?”

Throughout September, DEMA and the Arizona Emergency Information Network (AzEIN) will focus on weekly themes that encourage residents to take simple, practical steps toward preparedness.

“Preparedness is about building resilience one step at a time,” said Brig. Gen. John A. Conley, the Adjutant General of the Arizona National Guard and DEMA Director. “By making a family communication plan, building out your emergency go-kit, and tailoring it to your household’s unique needs, you’re putting your team in the best position to win against any emergency. Take the time now—because there are no timeouts in a disaster.”

Weekly Focus Themes

  • Week 1: The Huddle – Identify the needs for your team. Create family communication and evacuation plans for home, work and school.
  • Week 2: Build Your Offense – Build your emergency go-kit be “Two Weeks Ready.”
  • Week 3: Defensive Strategy: Protect What Matters – Prepare for your household’s unique needs, including pets, medications and special supplies.
  • Week 4: Game Plan for Every Situation – Ensure you have a go-kit for every place you spend time: home, work and your vehicle.

Each week, AzEIN will share preparedness tips and resources on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) at @AzEIN. The tips will feature links directly to AzEIN resources, including emergency plan templates, and supply checklists.

In addition to DEMA, the Arizona Departments of Agriculture, Environmental Quality, Forestry and Fire Management, Health Services, Homeland Security, Insurance and Financial Institutions, Public Safety, Registrar of Contractors, Transportation, Water Resources, Office of Resiliency, Arizona Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, Arizona Statewide Independent Living Council, County and Tribal Emergency Management Departments recognize the need for a Whole Community public education program about the importance of being prepared for any potential hazard.
