BULLHEAD CITY – Grandparents Day is coming up Sunday, September 7, and while many of us will have to settle for a phone call or FaceTime to celebrate with our grandparents, one local senior living community employee will simply walk down the hall.
Erika Johnson is the Community Life Director at Joshua Springs Senior Living – the same retirement community her grandfather calls home.
“He’s technically my husband’s grandfather but he’s really a grandfather to me, too. He was living with my in-laws in Kingman and feeling kind of isolated. I suggested he take a tour of Joshua Springs just to see if he liked it, and he ended up loving it. He’s been here with me since May,” said Johnson.
While Johnson’s grandfather may have been bored before, there’s plenty to keep him active at Joshua Springs. “He loves our socials,” Johnson said. “He was at our swing dance social and loves any time we do things like root beer floats.”
Johnson also mentioned the sense of pride he feels being honored for his service, something that happens often at the community.
“The Fourth of July was special because we reintroduced our veterans memorial wall, and he’s a veteran so he got to be a part of that,” she said.
Johnson’s grandfather isn’t the only one who loves the new living arrangement.
“It’s like I get to celebrate Grandparents Day every day.”
Joshua Springs Senior Living will be holding at Grandparents Day Brunch with food at games on Grandparents Day (September 7) at 11 a.m.
