It is a dilemma. I read an article some time ago that described America’s most dangerous jobs and guess what, administering religious services was eighth on the list. In the wisdom literature of the Bible there is the statement, “A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.” I must admit, it caused me to pause and consider what I am doing as a pastor. To what extent are we to be our brother’s keeper? And if we are tasked with this high calling, what is the best way to achieve compassion mixed with realism?
According to a 2023 survey by The Pew Research Group, “…about 28% of U.S. adults are religiously unaffiliated, describing themselves as atheists, agnostics or ‘nothing in particular’ when asked about their religion.”
The de-evolving church. I think this may be an original term, but perhaps not an original idea. When something evolves, it gradually becomes more complex, or it adapts.
So, Texas is taking a stab at reintroducing biblical teachings and concepts into classrooms beginning next year according to The Associated Press.
At issue is whether basic Judeo/Christian doctrines should be taught from a historical perspective and whether the bleed from history to proselytization is a slippery slope.
Unless one is adamant that such moral and ethical underpinnings were not a part of our nation’s history, a view that most rational people would dismiss, the fact is, we, at a minimum, were once more Christianized and Judaized.
