Old animal shelter building to go up for auction

KINGMAN – Anybody want to buy a dilapidated animal shelter across the railroad tracks in downtown Kingman? That question may well be answered through an auction Mohave County intends to conduct next month.

The county hopes to liquidate its old animal shelter property at 950 Buchanan St., after it was mothballed when the new shelter opened last November near the District Library on Burbank Street.

The shuttered shelter is situated on a .75-acre parcel with a near 900 sq. ft. office building and sq. ft. on the property, and a mish-mash of kennel enclosures totaling about 3,200 sq. on the property. Gilbert, Arizona-based appraiser L. Dean Ramsey calculated value at $350,000.

Ramsey’s appraisal report noted all city services are available and that the Shelter neighborhood features a mix of commercial, residential and industrial use with direct proximity to recreational ball field amenities. “This bodes well for the subject property, in the short and long terms,” the report said.

Ramsey speculated that the property may be suited for use by other animal welfare organizations.

“Current shelters in Mohave County, such as the Kingman Animal Shelter and Western Arizona Humane Society, report high intake numbers, especially for dogs and cats,” the appraisal report stated. “There is often overcrowding, suggesting unmet demand for additional or expanded facilities.”

The auction is planned at the Administration Building at 700 W. Beale Street at 10:00 am, April 21. Questions regarding qualification and participation protocols and other auction logistics posed March 11 were unanswered by county officials by press time.
