Mohave County sends Second Amendment message

MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave County has made history by becoming the first local jurisdiction in the State of Arizona to declare itself a Second Amendment Sanctuary. Mohave County Supervisors voted 5-0 Monday, November 4, approving the Second Amendment Sanctuary County Resolution proposed by Board Chairman Hildy Angius.

Angius expressed hope that other Arizona counties will adopt similar resolutions, as have scores of other counties and cities across the nation. The District 2 Supervisor from Bullhead City said Resolution No. 2019-118 sends a message that Mohave County will oppose any erosion of rights afforded under the Arizona and U.S. Constitutions, specifically the Second Amendment right to possess and bear firearms.

“There is traction to implement gun control laws, even here in Arizona,” Angius said. “I refuse to let that happen here in Mohave County without a fight.”

The Resolution makes clear Mohave County’s commitment to Constitutional provisions.

“The Board affirms its support of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and declares Mohave County a Second Amendment Sanctuary County,” the Resolution stated. “This Board will not authorize or appropriate government funds, resources, employees, agencies, contractors, buildings, detention centers or offices for the purpose of enforcing laws that unconstitutionally infringe on the people’s right to keep and bear arms.”

Adoption of the Resolution was encouraged and applauded by District 4 Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar and District 5 State Senator Sonny Borrelli and Representative Leo Biasiucci. Each of them told supervisors they’ve already opposed gun control legislation, and pledged to fight additional attempts to impose restrictions.

“We need to send a loud message to Washington D.C. to wake up,” Gosar said.

Borrelli said the right to bear firearms is necessary for self-defense.

“When seconds count, the police are minutes away,” Borrelli said. “You should be able to maintain that God-given right to protect yourself.”

District 5 Supervisor Ron Gould echoed Gosar in that the Second Amendment also gives people the power to oppose overbearing rule.

“The purpose of the Second Amendment is to throw off an oppressive government,” Gould said. “It’s a right given to you by God that is only affirmed in the Constitution. It’s your God-given right to be free.”

Sheriff Doug Schuster said the Resolution affirms his oath to defend rights afforded under the State and Federal Constitutions. “The day they outlaw guns is the day your Sheriff becomes an outlaw.”
