Mohave County seeks to reopen Davis Dam for tourism, education

At its bi-weekly board meeting on Monday, April 7, the Mohave County Board of Supervisors (BOS) held the first vote regarding the potential re-opening of Davis Dam. The Board unanimously passed a resolution expressing support for the dam’s reopening.

Davis Dam has been closed for almost 30 years, but there is a push to open the dam for tourism and education. The BOS vote urges the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) to open the dam for this purpose.

Supervisor Lettman says they would like to have the dam open for Public Lands Week, which is the last week in September. Public Lands Day is Saturday, September 27.

Lettman believes that Davis Dam holds a very important place in the history of the Colorado River area. “Unless you’re Native American or you grew up around Needles, the reason we’re all here is Davis Dam being built,” Lutman said at the Bullhead City Council meeting.

The school districts for Clark County and Bullhead City are both interested in organizing field trips for junior high school students to visit the dam as well.

A 75-year anniversary event for the completion of the dam is also part of the plan, which would occur on January 8, 2026. On that date in 1951, the switch for the dam was official turned on for the first time by the Secretary of the Interior at the time.

This effort would involve the collaboration of Mohave County, Clark County, Bullhead City, Laughlin Town Council, and many other community organizations. Bullhead City passed its resolution at the last board meeting, and a resolution is expected from Clark County School District and Bullhead City School District.
