MOHAVE COUNTY — Mohave Community College (MCC) proudly announces a historic milestone with the commitment of 14 talented young women to the soccer team. These athletes will be among those etched in history as members of the first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) soccer program in northwestern Arizona, and their commitment to play at MCC is a significant leap forward for the program.
Coach Cynthia Cervantes, who spearheaded the women’s team recruitment efforts, expressed her excitement for the future of the soccer team. “It’s truly an honor to witness the birth of the women’s soccer program at MCC, and I couldn’t be prouder of the incredible talent we’ve assembled. These young women are not just athletes; they are trailblazers, contributing to the legacy of the first NJCAA athletic program in this region,” Coach Cervantes remarked.
Nine players from throughout Mohave County are among the first 14 to commit to play for the Bighorns.

Due to personal reasons, Coach Cervantes also announced she will be leaving MCC. In reflecting on her time at the college, she shared this was not an easy decision, “My tenure at Mohave Community College has been filled with wonderful experiences and the joy of building something special. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Coach Camilo Valencia and laying the foundation for the soccer program. While I’m sad to leave, I’m confident in the future success of the team and the impact these players will make on and off the field.”
Director of Soccer and Men’s Team Head Coach Camilo Valencia expressed gratitude for Coach Cervantes’ contributions, saying, “Cynthia has played a crucial role in the initial stages of establishing our women’s soccer program. We wish her the very best and are grateful for the positive impact she had on the terrific athletes she recruited.”
A national search for a new women’s team head coach is underway. Coach Valencia will oversee the women’s team and, alongside other college employees, will assist the new players with their transition to the college.
The women’s soccer team, under the leadership of Coach Valencia and a new women’s team head coach, will enter the NJCAA season in August 2024. The college is excited about the prospects and the positive impact this team will have on the communities in northwestern Arizona.
MCC extends its heartfelt thanks to Coach Cervantes for her instrumental role in shaping the women’s soccer program and wishes her success in her future endeavors.
