Mohave Community College (MCC) introduces cultural activities that the community can explore through their student clubs. Last week the school’s Latino Club hosted a baile folklorico dance class, a dance style that has been present in Mexican culture since the early 1950s.

The class took place Friday, April 5 f at Mohave Community College. The Latin Club’s mission was created to give MCC and Lake Havasu a chance to preserve cultural traditions through music, fine arts, and dance. Instructor of the class was MCC student Anna Jazlyn Ortiz who has been studying dance since she was a child and her mother introduced her to baile folklorico.

Oritz has aspirations to someday attend The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, the university known for their reputable baile folklorico program. Students of the class are mostly children but the class is open to anyone interested in learning this traditional dance.

Classes for the remainder of this month will take place on April 12, 19, and 26. Other classes scheduled to follow will be May 3, 10, and 27. All classes will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Havasu’s MCC campus in room 706.
